This post is inspired by a webinar that I did last week with the lovely Petra Smith, founder of marketing agency Squirrels & Bears. The webinar was entitled ‘How to Build You Brand Online & Offline’ and while it was aimed at business owners and freelancers, I felt that there was actually a lot in there that could benefit everyone.
The term ‘personal brand’ has become a bit of a buzz phrase the last few years with the rise in social media platforms, but a personal brand is just a fancy word for our identity and our essence, and its something every single one of us has.
I decided to dedicate this week’s episode of the #NoFilterNeeded podcast to the brand of you, but before you listen to that, here are 3 of my top tips from the webinar to identify and build confidence with your personal brand and truly own your essence!
You cannot put your best self forward if you don’t know what your best self is.
What looks good on other people does not mean it will look good on you, which is why it is so important that you spend intentional time getting to know yourself.
You want to work with people who understand you, so that your work or personal relationships are aligned.
Trying to be all things to all people will cause your life and business to feel like an uphill struggle with imposter syndrome. Your unique qualities, and their unique combination, are the very thing that make you so special. No-one else is like you and that is your power.
Building your personal brand starts with identifying the specific things that make you who you are. When you embrace those things every day, you build your confidence. You find your personal power, and people can’t help but notice you, because your presence is so strong, and your offering is so unique. Here are 3 things you can start implementing now to enhance both your business and personal life:
- Find your gold
What activities make you feel good when you do them? Which activities do the opposite? Which people make you feel good when you are with them? Which people do the opposite? Which environments do you like being in? Which don’t you like being in?
Asking yourself questions is the best way to discover more about yourself. You think you should know yourself, because you are after all you, but a lot of your actions and thought processes are actually not made consciously. They are subconscious reactions to past experiences trigged by current environments. The more questions you ask, the more you will uncover about yourself.
- Focus on your strengths, not on your weaknesses.
We have a natural tendency to focus on the negative more than the positive. Negative experiences have a stronger hold on us than the positive ones and so we give them more focus and attention. This means we are often breaking ourselves trying to turn our weaknesses into strengths. What is far more beneficial to you is to focus on your strengths. Not only will you have a lot more enjoyment doing it, but you will excel with things much faster, as well as being far truer to you – and authenticity is very attractive. Also, what’s more, is that the more strengths that you build, the more irrelevant your weaknesses become.
- Listen to your gut
If something doesn’t feel right, then it generally isn’t right for you. Whether it’s content you are posting on social media, conversations you are having with others, or people or places that you are visiting. If it doesn’t make you feel good, then something is misaligned. You want to make sure that whatever you do is in line with who you are and showcases your best abilities. Spend time each day, perhaps when you wake up and when you go to bed, to remind yourself who you are and what unique things you can offer to the world that only you can. This will keep all that you do aligned with who you are and ensure that you are being authentic and your best possible self, day in and day out.
If you are in business – or looking to be – then I highly recommend that you check out Petra’s post on how to showcase your best self online here.
